Here, we give you a low-down on all you need to keep in mind when packing your kitchen for the big move.

Getting the supplies

Our kitchens have all kinds of items, from delicate glassware to hard furniture that will require various packing materials. You will need packing boxes of different sizes, packing paper, bubble wrap, quality packing tape, and permanent markers. Buying supplies ahead of time will quicken the packing process.

Appliances

It’s a big plus if you have original boxes of all your kitchen appliances. If not, get boxes that fit each of them right. Before packing, ensure that each appliance is clean and dry as it can leak and destroy other things in the cargo. Locate the owner manuals and bring them along for easy assembly later. Wrap fragile pieces of all appliances and stack lighter stuff on the top.

Dinnerware and glassware

Take a box that can fit your plates and start by placing bubble wrap or packing paper at the bottom. Pack each dinnerware separately with bubble wrap or packing paper and stack them one at a time. You can add an extra layer of thin packing paper between each dinnerware.

Silverware

Loosely packing silverware can break fragile items stored in a shared box. Save yourself the headache and pack them separately in a medium or large container. Wrap the same type of silverware together by a string or rubber band before packing them. This will allow effortless unpacking when you’re settling in your new home.

Food

Unclutter your pantry and discard the things that are nearing expiry. If there are items you don’t use anymore, donate them to a local food bank. Try to carry food items with you rather than sending them via cargo.

Pots and pans

Once you find the right box, wrap your biggest pan in packing paper and stack smaller pans and containers on top of it. If you have a set of boxes, see if they can be emptied and stacked inside each other. Pans usually come with glass lids; therefore, pack them in bubble wrap and keep them in a glassware box.

Miscellaneous items

Pack all other utensils and off items together with a single layer of packing paper to save space. Use them to fill up bits of unused space in other boxes.
