What Defines a Moving Company

If you are moving to a new location and don’t want to lift your belongings you should consider a moving company. Moving companies will wrap up all of your belongings, move your stuff for you, and provide the truck. Some companies offer “half-move” programs where they only lift the heavier items. Other services provided are “unwrapping” where they also unpack the items for you.

Southwest Movers has over a decade of experience and a few accolades to show their reliability. But what sort of accreditations can other moving companies acquire? There are three ‘top-tier’ accreditations, and there are also a few minor certifications. Better Business Bureau, International Association of Movers and the American Moving and Storage Association.

Accreditations for Moving Services

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) offers accreditations on one main tenant. “A commitment to make a good faith effort to resolve any consumer complaints.” The BBB also charges a fee for consultation for accreditation. So if a company isn’t BBB accredited doesn’t mean that it doesn’t qualify but rather they might not have the capital to afford the fee.

The International Association of Movers (IAM) is a trade union established internationally for people in the moving industry. Being part of the union means that you pay and charge the international standards. While there are business perks that come with using an IAM certified mover, it tends to benefit the company while also assuring the customers that it’s the standard.

The American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA) is arguably the best moving accreditation that a moving company can attain. The union offers certifications to show that the moving company is the following; Licensed and Insured, Compliant with Federal Regulations, BBB-acceptable, Vetted by AMSA and abides by ethical business practices. While it does not also receive a BBB-accreditation, AMSA certifies using the same credentials.

Finally, a good way to accredit moving companies is to consult social media. Yelp offers a great website filled with reviews left by former clients. Facebook and Angie’s List are the same, except it’s a little difficult to differ between friends of the client on Facebook. Google is arguably as good as Yelp because of their location based pages makes finding the website just as easy to finding the reviews.
