Moving your houseplants is a tricky thing to take care of, as loading them into a moving truck is not exactly an ideal way of transporting them. That said, there are ways of making the most out of the situation, and techniques to ensure your plants make it through the trip.

Plant Moving Tips

Get Supplies

Make sure that you have all of the necessary supplies needed to complete the move. These supplies include, but are not limited to plastic pots to replace clay pots during transit, sterilized potting soil, packing paper or newspaper, Bubble Wrap®, and plastic bags and ties.

Plant Preparation and Packing

Due to them being alive, preparation and packaging of plants are a little different than packing up your other household items. Here is the best process to handle this:

–    Move plants into new plastic containers. Make sure to have fresh soil put in along with the plant. Then clean out and bubble wrap clay pot that the plant typically lives.

–    Inspect for any bugs, as you do not want to bring these pests along with you.

–    Make sure to water your plants before moving, 3-r days to be exact. This should keep the soil moist, but not too wet.

Next, you will have to pack your potted plant:

–    Place a plastic bag over the pot and tie it at the base to keep the soil enclosed.

–    Tape the bottom of the box well, then place the plant inside.

–    Fill in any extra space with packing paper or newspaper, so the plant is secure but can breathe.

–    Poke holes in the box to allow for air flow.

–    Label the box “Live Plant” and “Fragile.”

Take it With You

moving company vs moving yourselfThough you have a moving truck to transport the rest of your things, it is better that you have your plants with you in your car. This will allow you to be able to control their supply of sunlight and fresh air better.
