While transporting small household items isn’t a problem, moving bulky furniture pieces can be challenging, especially if you plan to DIY the move. Without the proper tools, planning, and equipment, you may end up with scratched or broken furniture. Whether you’re doing it yourself or hiring professionals, the priority must be to protect the furniture before packing it for transportation.

Wrap furniture

Here are eight tips to make sure your valuable furniture reaches the new location  undamaged:

Explore valuation coverage and insurance options

The moving company is responsible for the safety of your cargo while on the move. Your valuation coverage will determine the type and amount of reimbursement you will receive for lost or damaged items in case of an accident. Explore the valuation coverage your moving company offers, along with additional insurance options.

Disassemble before packing

Disassemble furniture parts like bed frames, tables, and modular sofas. Use the original assembly instructions to deconstruct the item before packing the furniture in a labeled cardboard box.

Label and place screws and bolts inside plastic bags

Don’t forget about the screws, nuts, and bolts of your furniture that hold everything together. Place these inside a sealed plastic bag and label each bag with the corresponding furniture items. This will ensure that you can quickly reassemble furniture.

Wrap furniture in protective material

Stuffing your furniture in the truck can cause serious damage. You should prepare your furniture by wrapping it in a tear-resistant material like plastic wrap to protect the items during transit. You can also use moving blankets, large sheets, flattened cardboard, and towels as a protective layer.

Clear doorways

You can safely move the furniture in and out of the home by clearing the doorways and entryways of all clutter. Prop the doors open as widely as possible with a doorstop and keep them open throughout. It will protect the furniture from hitting door frames and wall corners while being carried.

Don’t move heavy furniture by yourself

Do not attempt to pick up heavy furniture without special equipment and professional help, as it can cause injuries and cause property damage. Recruit a moving company or ask your friends to help you move the furniture safely.

Rent special moving equipment

You will need special equipment like a dolly, hand truck, moving straps, and a sideboard for moving larger furniture pieces. They allow you to lift heavy appliances and furniture pieces like oversized chairs, refrigerators, pianos, dining tables, and pool tables.

If you have hardwood floors, the place felt pads, gliders, towels, and cardboard underneath heavy furniture. It will ensure that the furniture doesn’t scratch the floor surface.

Rent a moving truck with tie-downs and a ramp

If you plan to DIY the move, ensure that you rent a moving truck or container with tie-downs and a ramp. The tie-down track keeps the furniture in place and prevents it from breaking during transit. The ramp makes it easy to load and unload heavy items.
