One of the most challenging aspects of moving is ensuring the safe transportation of breakables and fragile items. Most of these things—glassware, furniture, showpieces, electronics, and artwork—are expensive and need to be handled with extra care.

Pack Fragile Items

A lot of companies provide moving services, but not everyone is equipped to handle your delicate belongings. Therefore, you need to ensure that your packing is foolproof to reduce the chances of damage and breakage to the minimum.

Here we share seven packing tips to help you provide added cover to your fine things during transit.

Get the right packing materials

Fragile items require suitable packing materials to protect them from cracks and damages during transportation. Ensure you use:

  • Boxes
  • Bubble wrap
  • Dish and glass packers
  • Markers
  • Newspaper or packing paper
  • Packing peanuts
  • Plastic furniture covers
  • Tape
  • Towels or rags

Prepare in advance

Pack fragile items either before or after packing everything else. Breakables require extra attention, and hence, take longer to fill. Rather than saving them for the last day, make room in your packing schedule for such items.

Wrap each piece individually

Use bubble wraps or packing paper to pack all kinds of breakables, from glassware to decorative items. If they have multiple loose parts, disassemble them and wrap them separately. Handle delicate items such as china, porcelain, ceramics, and glass with care and use bubble wrap and packing tape to provide them the needed safety.

Provide cushioning

Layer the box’s bottom with soft packing material such as towels, blankets, bubble wrap, foam, or styrofoam peanuts. If you don’t have the budget for bubble wrap, you can use packing paper or newspapers.

If an artwork or glassware is hollow in the middle, fill it up with tissue paper or newsprint. Once you are done packing a box, pull it up and shake it. If the items inside are moving, use extra cushioning to fill up empty spaces and prevent them from banging together during the journey. You can also use cardboard dividers inside the boxes to avoid this.

Label

Clearly label each box that has fragile items. Keep these boxes in a separate area and instruct movers to handle them with extra care. Putting a ‘handle with care’ tag on the boxes will ensure safe transit and unpacking at your new home.

Don’t overstuff the boxes

Separate each item and pack them in smaller boxes rather than stacking multiple items together in a single large carton. If you keep two or more things in a single box, put the heaviest items at the base, so the box is well supported.

Hire a moving company

If packing all your fragile items safely sounds like too much work, hire a white-glove moving company. It will help you with packing, moving, and unpacking, so you don’t have to worry about anything at all.
